Zumba…NOT for me!

Ok! Let me set the scene. For several weeks now my sister has been trying to convince me to go to a Zumba class with her. For those of you who may not have heard of the world wide phenomenon that is ZUMBA it is supposed to be “an exhilerating, effective, easy to follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning, dance fitness-party”. They have got to be joking! Latin inspired… yes, but the rest NO… NO… NO… NO!  Not exhilerating, not effective and certainly NOT easy to follow.

Being the adventurous person that I am, I agreed to go with my sister for the Zumba experience. Before I walked into the class I thought I had some sort of rhythm, beat, inner groove going on… how wrong I was. I spent the first 10 minutes of the class completely pissing myself with laughter. The floor to ceiling mirrors around the room meant I was unable to escape looking at myself attempting dance moves that my body clearly had no idea how to do. I had body parts shaking and wobbling that I did not want to see shake or wobble. The experience did not improve when my sister completely gave up and walked out of the class after only 12 minutes. Did I mention that she was the one that made me do the class in the first place…Unbelievable!

I wanted to follow her out the door but I would have felt terrible for the instructor, so I soldiered on for another painfully long 45 mintues BY MYSELF! The only consolation was that no one else in the class was any good at the dance moves either…except of course the stunning, talented instructor.

The Zumba website boasts that over 10 million people of all shapes and sizes take part in Zumba in 110 countries around the world EVERY WEEK! I find this unbelievable! Zumba might be ok for fit, skinny people who can dance…but it is not so great for “not so skinny” people who are “not so fit” and who can’t dance.

Having just talked up how great the whole experience was and how awesome Zumba is I wanted to let everyone know that you too can try it! Hooray I hear you say!

Marrickville Council, NSW Sport and Recreation and local sporting organisations, are giving you the chance to try a different sport each month for free! Sport-a-Month lets you try sports without the hassle of buying equipment or getting registered. Every month there will be sessions hosted by local clubs and leisure organisations where people of all ages and abilities are invited to participate. Check out the Marrickville Council website for more details.

If you have ever thought you could be the next Barry Hall of AFL or Roger Federer of the tennis world, then you need to check out the Sport-A Month program because AFL, tennis and fencing are all coming up in the next couple of months. Or you could just download the Zumba registration form if you want to get your Latin groove on this month.

The Zumba slogan is “Ditch the Workout, Join the Party!”. It may not be my kind of party but if you are interested then you should give it a go. The worst that can happen (other than making a complete fool of yourself) is that you will burn a couple of calories off while you laugh at yourself or those around you. Take friends with you for support…maybe not your sister… I have learnt my lesson!
