Tom Bass Sculpture School Open Studio

My dreams of pretending I was Demi Moore and re-enacting the famous pottery wheel scene from the movie ‘Ghost’ were shattered when I opened my email account yesterday to read;

“Dear Nadine,
I’m sorry to inform you that you did not win the prize at Tom Bass Sculpture School’s Open Day Sunday, 5 June…”

The prize was a one day workshop at the school and thought I would be the perfect person to be selected to get my hands dirty and see how creative I could be with a lump of clay. Probably a good thing I didn’t win because after seeing the talented people and their work on display at the Open Studio I think my lack of skills would have been a little embarrassing.

I took advantage of the Open Day on Sunday 5 June and got to meet some great teachers, talented students, enjoy some live music and a sausage sandwich. I was surprised to find out that it is the oldest and largest independent Sculpture School in Australia

The school was founded by Tom Bass in 1974, and provides a creative environment for students with a range of interests in sculpture; practising sculptors, young and emerging artists, teachers and architects, as well as people in retirement and those wishing to explore sculpture for the first time.

For those with a creative streak running through their veins, the Tom Bass Sculpture School has some upcoming courses you might be interested in:

- 2 Day Wax Workshop with Michael Vaynman (3-4 July)
- 4 day Carving Workshop with Paul Hopmeier (9-12 July)
- Sculpture in a Day (19 June).
- Term 3 workshops start Saturday 16 July through to Thursday 22 September.  Classes include Beginners to Advanced Workshops, Life Study, and Life Drawing Class.

Check out their website for more course information. Love the bronze sculpture below titled “Plenty” by Julie Reiley.
