The Counter, Petersham

In recent months there has been an influx of great cafes opening throughout the Inner West. While The Counter has been around for a couple of years, I only just recently discovered it, so it’s new to me. Clearly a favourite with locals who have been trying to keep this one a secret… sorry, the secret is out. Only a short stroll from Petersham railway station, The Counter is one to add to your ‘must visit’ list.

Take a seat on a colourful stool outside around the stacked wooden pallet tables or head inside and enjoy the lovely interior with wall hung metal chairs, a gorgeous brick counter, open kitchen and delicious sights and smells that surround you.

They have a great all day breakfast menu with loads of variety and interesting choices. Torn between choosing the honey roasted Granny Smith apples, almond coconut crumble, burnt creme & rose water ($13) and the smashed avocado and Danish feta with slow poached eggs, cherry tomatoes and light chili gremolata ($15). The eggs won out this time but that really just gives me an excuse to return to try the crumble. The baked eggs in smokey tomato sauce, chorizo, chickpeas, kale and manchego ($17) were a winner too.

Make sure you save room for something sweet as the collection of cakes, muffins and baked treats looked mouth watering. Coffee here is a specially roasted blend by Marrickville’s Coffee Alchemy. Take advantage of their Happy Hour (7am-9am) for a $3 coffee on your way to work or drop in anytime to enjoy their well earned ‘SMH 1 Cup Award’.
