Marrickville Council Environmental Initiatives

Having just bought a property in the inner west I am always excited to find out about environmental initiatives of the Marrickville Council. I recently made my first visit to the Marrickville Organic Food & Farmers Market which was a foodies delight but while exploring the stalls I stumbled across a nursery out the back near The Bower.

The Marrickville Community Nursery sells native plants but they also have a fantastic initiative for garden mulch. The council provides left over garden mulch FREE of charge to the public (bring your own bags and shovels). It isn’t available every week but for those of you out there with a green thumb – it would be worth while popping in to check it out.

And then there is the The Watershed (218 King Street, Newtown) which is a sustainability resource centre in the heart of Newtown which is free and open to the public and offers a variety of services such as a library, free workshops, ideas for everyday sustainable living, educational and business programs. In August & September they are running workshops on topics such as Eco Choices for Home Renovators, Installing PV Solar Panels, No Dig Gardening plus loads more… did I mention they were FREE!

The Marrickville Council’s also runs a plastic bag reduction program, Bagbusters, which aims to reduce the number of plastic shopping bags used in the local government area.

The council has recently installed a funky new water bubbler on the corner of King Street and Enmore Road to encourage the reduction of the number of plastic water bottles purchased. The water bubblers also offer filtered water for all you water snobs out there – so no excuses.

I am sure there are loads of other environmental initiatives happening out there in the inner west – let us know about them.
