MakMak Macarons joins the Newtown family

Get excited Inner Westies! Newtown is about to be macaron heaven. MakMak Macarons is opening its first retail outlet at 601 King Street, Newtown. On a recent trip down South King Street I noticed the MakMak logo completely covering their front window. I’ve been dying to see inside… knowing all that sweet goodness was behind those closed doors. The good news is we won’t have to wait long! Initially, MakMak will open as a Christmas Pop Up shop on December 17 before closing in the New Year for renovations. The new outlet will officially open in March 2013.

MakMak’s macarons were recently declared to be Sydney’s best in a blind tasting by esteemed Sydney chefs Christine Manfield (Universal), Peter Gilmore (Quay) and Ross Lusted (The Bridge Room). The trio scored the macarons on texture, flavour, lightness and presentation and each voted MakMak number one, ahead of Adriano Zumbo, Laduree, Baroque and Creasion. The results appeared in the November issue of TimeOut Sydney.

MakMak began life in a domestic Redfern kitchen in 2010. MakMak’s founder, Carlos Heng entered his macarons into The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation’s Annual Bake Off, winning Best in Show and Best Fete Baking. That was enough to convince Heng that MakMak had a future.

Today, MakMak employs eight chefs and produces up to five thousand macarons each week, all made entirely by hand. MakMak Macarons has launched the first wave of its Summer collection of macaron flavours. The five new flavours are:

Passionfruit, Orange & Lemon Myrtle
Blueberry & Lime
Strawberry, Vincotto & Pink Peppercorn
Caramel Macchiato

I’ll be one of the first in line when MakMak Macaroons opens it’s doors on December 17. What a perfect Christmas present for the Inner West.
