Kerry Lowe Gallery, Newtown

So great to see a gallery space devoted to ceramics. I visited the opening night of Andrew Halford and Stephanie James-Manttan’s ceramic show at the Kerry Lowe Gallery on King Street, Newtown.

Andrew’s work oozes craftsmanship and technical skill which is grounded in his training and work practice. His early training with Les Blakeborough and Shiga Shigeo followed by two years under Shimaoko Tatsuzo and three years working in south west Honshu. Intricate rope, diamond and shell pattern inlays decorate surfaces on large classical spherical vessels, platters and jewel cases. All beautifully refined.

Stephanie James-Manttan’s vessels feature intense tactile textures on porcelain surfaces which have been indented, altered and squeezed to give original thrown cylindrical forms a new identity. These forms need their own space and look stunning displayed by themselves.

Exhibitions run from 17 June -5 July
