Interview with local Inner Westie and comedian Rodney Todd

With Sydney Fringe just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning what music, art and comedy events you want to check out. From 6-29 September the Inner West explodes into a festival celebrating creativity. With over 70,000 people attending events taking place in over 66 venues around Sydney, you’ll definitely find something that tickles your fancy. Local Inner Westie, Rodney Todd will be taking part in the Fringe Festival with his comedy show “Arguing with Seagulls“. Huge thanks to Rodney for taking the time to answer my questions.

How did you get into comedy?
Years ago, I sent an email to a group of friends about a really bad job interview, It was horrible. I wrote down the experience then I sent it to a group of friends. It seemed funny in some tragic sense. In the interview I lied about my experience but then got caught out and also fumbled on my words and asked really stupid questions.  A friend said I should do that in a stand up routine, I didn’t really know how to do stand up. A few months later another friend forwarded an email about RAW comedy and said I should do it. So I applied and did it.  I was very nervous and I didn’t really know what I was doing. A comedian came up to me afterwards and gave me his details and said he books a room and he gave me a spot, I enjoyed doing it so I haven’t stopped.

How would you describe your sense of humour and your comedy style?
It’s hard to describe my own comedy but maybe it’s absurd, weird, arrogant, exuberant, informative and debonair …sometimes.

Where do you get inspiration for your shows?
I like to get inspired by shithouse things that happen to me then turn it around and let it out during a show. It’s kind of therapeutic.

What’s your favourite venue to perform at in the Inner West?
I would have to say it’s The Friend in Hand Hotel, it’s been going for years and they gave me a go when I first started.

I’ve always thought being a comedian would be a terrifying career! I’m assuming you don’t share my opinion. What would be your least favourite job to do?
My least favourite job would be every day job I’ve had!

What’s your most memorable gig so far as a comedian? Why?
My most memorable gig was when I got really drunk and didn’t remember a thing I did on stage then I woke up the next day and thought “I’ll never do that again”.

Do you usually perform by yourself or do you collaborate with other comedians/performers?
I usually perform by myself but with Festival shows it’s fun to collaborate so it has more variety.

Who is your favourite comedian (local or international)?
That’s a tough one, I would need to put them in categories like tone, speed, velocity, delivery, vocal projection, microphone positioning, facial expression, material, and costume design.

You’re taking part in Sydney Fringe 2013. What can we expect from your upcoming show “Arguing with Seagulls’?
You can expect exuberance and clarity with laughter and agreeingnessly. If agreeingnessly is a word you would probably agree with me. Oh and my friend Shane Matheson is in it. He lives in Enmore? Do you want his address? He’ll probably get cranky if I gave out his address. I mean he lives in Marrickville, I mean Newtown, I mean St Peters, I mean Camdenville.

Inner west questions
Best place for a caffeine hit in the Inner West? An Espresso Martini from The Midnight Special

What/where was the last great meal you ate in the Inner West? I had a great Falafel roll with Zatar with extra chillies from Manoosh last night. It was pretty great. I do go there frequently though. Probably because it’s good. Is that a meal? Is a meal anything you eat? What if I just had a Samosa would that work?

What’s the Inner West’s best kept secret? I’m not sure it’s a secret but I found it funny that the only butcher on King St is a Vegetarian Butcher.
