Harry’s Cafe de Wheels at Tempe

Hungry, tired and covered from head to toe in dust and paint from our late night renovation blitz…the thought of going home and making something for dinner was far from appealing. The newly opened Harry’s Cafe de Wheels in Tempe was only a short drive away… how could we resist!

Pulling into Harry’s Cafe de Wheels carpark I felt like I was entering an episode of “Happy Days” and at any moment The Fonz was going to ride in on his motorbike. I checked out the blackboard menu and I couldn’t go past the signature dish, Harry’s ‘Tiger’ Pie named after the founder Harry ‘Tiger’ Edwards – a meat pie with mash potato, mushy peas and gravy galore – genius! My meat lover husband practically jumped over the counter to get the Hot Dog de Wheels.

Harry’s Cafe started way back in 1938 when Harry Edwards opened a caravan café near the front gates of the Woolloomooloo naval dockyard. He operated the caravan until 1938 when he enlisted in the AIF during WWII. Harry returned in 1945, and realised that Sydney still needed a place to get good food late at night, so he reopened the caravan and it has been operating since. There may have been several changes in owners but the essence of Harry’s Cafe de Wheels remains the same. Check out the website for more historical facts and pics.

FUN FACT: The phrase ‘Café de Wheels’ came about as the city council of the day insisted that mobile food caravans move a minimum of 12 inches a day. Harry obeyed and the name was expanded to Harry’s Café de Wheels. Before the councils ruling, the caravan was known simply as ‘Harry’s.’
