Dendy Newtown celebrates the ‘Newtown is Fashion’ festival

In association with the City of Sydney’s Sydney is Fashion festival, Dendy Cinemas Newtown are presenting a weekly series of three films celebrating all things fashion. The line up includes Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The September Issue and Bill Cunningham New York.

Screening every Thursday evening at 8.45pm throughout the festival, the films have been specifically chosen to reflect the local Newtown is Fashion theme for the week in conjunction with local retailers.

Newtown is Fashion
Thu 22 Aug
– Mainstream, Vintage, Retro, Collectibles
Thu 29 Aug – Designer, Designed, DIY, Artisan
Thu 5 Sep – The Wildlife of Newtown: Alternate, Burlesque, Goth, Punk, Tatts

The first film, 1961’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s will screen on Thursday the 22nd of August as the Newtown Precinct’s vintage and retro program commences. In what is perhaps style-icon Audrey Hepburn’s most famous role, the black Givenchy dress worn by Hepburn at the start of the film is often cited as one of the most famous items of clothing in the history of cinema and perhaps the greatest “little black dress” of all time.

To tie in with the Newtown designers and designer fashion week; The September Issue, screening on Thursday the 28th of August, chronicles Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her larger-than-life team of editor’s preparations for the 2007 fall-fashion issue. If fashion is a religion, Vogue is the bible. The September 2007 edition of Vogue ended up becoming the single largest issue of a magazine which was ever published.

The final film in the program is Bill Cunningham New York, celebrating the wildlife and alternative fashion to be found in Newtown and screening on the 5th of September. Chronicling New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham, this bicycle-riding cultural anthropologist has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirées for the Times Style section. Documenting uptown fixtures, downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair.

Tickets are available via www.dendy.com.au for $12 or $10 for Club Dendy Members. Pre-book tickets to ensure you don’t miss out.
