In recent months there has been an influx of great cafes opening throughout the Inner West. While The Counter has been around for a couple of years, I only just recently discovered it, so it’s new to me. Clearly a favourite with locals who have been trying to keep this one a secret… sorry, the secret is out. Only a short stroll from Petersham railway station, The Counter is one to add...

New rooftop bar at the Marlborough Hotel, Newtown

New rooftop bar at the Marlborough Hotel, Newtown
Sitting loudly and proudly on the corner of King Street and Missenden Road, the Marlborough Hotel and it’s giant neon sign is a symbol that you have well and truly entered King Street. While The Marly has had a grungier former life, a fresh coat of paint, a garden party themed makeover at the back bar and the addition of the Miss Peaches Soul Food Kitchen upstairs has given it a face lift. Last...

Grumpy Baker, Marrickville

Grumpy Baker, Marrickville
There’s a new baker in Marrickville and apparently he’s grumpy. That may well be, but his bread is delicious. I guess if I had to get up at the crack of dawn to bake for hungry Inner Westies, I’d be grumpy too :) Located in the industrial area of Marrickville on Meeks Road, Grumpy Baker houses the bakery out the back, a cafe at the front and a big glass window separates the two areas. Owner...

Interview: Newtown Fire Station Officer, Matt Murphy
How long have you been working at the Newtown Fire Station and what is your role at the station? I started my career as a fireman in Newtown in 1987. It was a pretty wild place for a naïve suburban kid but I loved it and moved to the area in the early 90s. I got transferred  to Ashfield two years later for a bit, then 11 years at Leichhardt. After I became an officer I applied for Newtown or a...

Brighton the Corner, Petersham

Brighton the Corner, Petersham
Brighton The Corner is a new cafe in Petersham, only about one month old and already drawing a crowd. Scott Duncan and Nigel Park have created a cafe in a beautiful leafy street with a perfect corner position. Enjoy your coffee outside under the black and white striped awning, at the window seat overlooking Brighton Street or at a cosy table inside.  I love an all day breakfast menu and Brighton...

Paesanella Food Emporium in Marrickville is OPEN!
Foodies rejoice! Marrickville just keeps getting better and better. I have watched with interest the development of the Paesanella Food Emporium over the last couple of months, but it wasn’t until yesterday that I ventured inside.
