Alexandria, the new foodie destination!

Alexandria, the new foodie destination!
Real estate is not the only thing buzzing in Alexandria right now. If you live or work in Alexandria and like your food, suddenly you have a whole lot more options for day and evening dining. Watch out Surry Hills, Alexandria is hot on your heels. The Grounds of Alexandria really set things moving and its success has obviously encouraged new businesses to come to the area with Vicinity just across...

King Street Report, May 2012

King Street Report, May 2012
Sadly evidence of the retail downturn continues to hit King Street with more shop closures recently of long standing stores including Books on King and Seduce which coincidentally are next door neighbours and now sit empty. Continuing down this side of King Street, Monster Thread’s previous location has been finally occupied with new tenant Telstra moving in a few months ago. Further south,...

Sustainability & Eco-friendly but does it taste good?

Sustainability & Eco-friendly but does it taste good?
Discovered this restaurant a month ago and then couldn’t get a booking till Saturday night. Practically drooling with suspense we took extra care at the bottleshop to pick the perfect red as we had an idea we were in for a special treat. Spencer Guthrie’s is not a large venue so perfect for smaller gatherings. Located at 399 King St, Newtown, it’s Newtown’s latest restaurant...

Pickwicks in Enmore

Pickwicks in Enmore
We are all in such a hurry these days, we need to slow down and enjoy that bottle of red over a gorgeous meal. Pickwicks is the place to do it! An intimate venue with loads of character on Enmore Road. I have been walking by this restaurant since it opened without trying it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Saturday night the planets aligned and 3 of us got together for dinner. First stop was the bottleshop...

Winter closures and Pre-Spring Openings!

Winter closures and Pre-Spring Openings!
The last month of winter has seen several new business ventures spring to life on King St and sadly a few closures as well. Starting at 228 King St, which last month was Joshua & Sean, has quickly re-opened as Kaboodle, an accessories store which many of you might know from various markets around town. They also stock Red Dog Designs which we have blogged about previously. I know a lot of you will...

It’s all about the Mash on King St, Newtown

It's all about the Mash on King St, Newtown
I may as well have called it the mash report after sampling the sausages and mash at one new business at the southern end of King St (Smash Sausage Kitchen) and then the pies and mash just off King St at The Pie Tin (Brown St  – northern end of King opposite Single Origin). Wow, specialty cafes and restaurants are on the rise and if I keep this up I am going to have to run up and down the full...

Ikea Tempe is getting closer to opening their doors

Ikea Tempe is getting closer to opening their doors
Recently I set up a home office and I had to make the trek/expedition out to Rhodes Ikea. Seriously that place is a nightmare to get to. I thought I was being smart by leaving work early and going on Friday afternoon, there was no way I was going to deal with a weekend crowd at Ikea. My plan was really good in theory until I hit the traffic at 3pm Friday afternoon on Parramatta Rd, what a shocker. Anyway,...

Movers & Shakers on King St, Newtown

Movers & Shakers on King St, Newtown
What a week of deluge, thank goodness I chose Friday to do the first King Street report. Monsterthreads is sitting pretty in its new prime position at No. 251, right next door to Pentimento, the old shop sits sadly empty. I cross the road to check out Mitre 10 which I thought was renovating but it seems they have moved around the corner to premises in Whately Lane and are open for business. On the...

This is not a review of Catfish

This is not a review of Catfish
I can’t review Catfish, the latest movie about facebook, any info will destroy the story, so all I am going to say is, that yes it is about facebook, but it is very different from “The Social Network” movie. It will make you think about just how much our lives have changed in just a few short years due to the dramatic rise in popularity of social media. There is a photographer, a...

Drilling for gas in St Peters?

Drilling for gas in St Peters?
Are they kidding? Did anyone wake up this morning and hear the news about a company drilling for gas in St Peters and think it must be April Fool’s Day? But no it seems this is real. Apparently by all reports the NSW state government gave permission for gas miner Macquarie Energy to begin a test drill in St Peters, just 5 km from the CBD. The drilling site is within the Alexandria Landfill site...
