A Match Made in Heaven – Koskela & Kitchen By Mike

The Inner West is a hub for great food and design. New places are constantly opening and the two newbies on the block are Koskela & Kitchen By Mike! Koskela is an insanely cool design and furniture store, which was originally located in Surry Hills and has now moved to Rosebery and shares a warehouse space with Kitchen By Mike. Food and design under the one roof, as far as I’m concerned it’s the perfect combination.

My husband and I decided to grab a late lunch at Kitchen By Mike in the hope that we would avoid the lunch-time rush. Turns out, due to its popularity, it’s always busy. I guess I should’ve expected that with Mike McEnearney (a former Rockpool Chef) in the kitchen, cooking up delicious creations. The great thing about going with my husband is that he’s not super keen on shopping, so he lined up for the food, while I got to check out the awesome products on display in Koskela.

Koskela has fanstatic lighting, bedding, chairs, sofas, rugs, art, children’s toys and homewares… you name it – they have it. Everything you need to furnish your dream home can be found in this stunning warehouse! I was in design heaven. I completely fell in love with the hand crafted lampshades which are now at the top of my list of things I wish I could buy.

I could hear my husbands stomach rumbling from the other side of the warehouse so I headed back to Kitchen By Mike just in time to slot into the front of the line and make my lunch selection. The cafe is set up in a buffet style and as you walk along the counter you can choose any combination of food from the very tempting dishes on display. I started with the freshly made bread and butter and I can honestly say  it was the best bread I have ever tasted! The roast chicken, spicy lentil and fig salad, baked pumpkin and corn on the cob all made it onto my plate. It came to about $28 so it’s not the cheapest lunch spot in the Inner West but the food was absolutely delicious (or just don’t be a piggy wiggy like me and pick everything on offer :) )

I would probably suggest a mid-week visit to avoid the crowds, but my guess is that with such great food and design in one location, Koskela and Kitchen By Mike will always be attracting the crowds.
